Get Started with Libby | Set-Up Instructions

Use the Libby app for ebooks and audiobooks!

Jump to: Screenshots | Plain-text instructions

Libby is the app you'll use for borrowing ebooks and audiobooks through our Overdrive subscription. As of November 1, 2022, we are part of an academic libraries consortium for ebooks and audiobooks in OverDrive! The consortium collection contains fiction and nonfiction as ebooks and audiobooks to read for pleasure or use for research. Libby can be downloaded on your phone or tablet for free through your preferred app store.

You may be familiar with Libby through our local public library system. If you've already got Libby set up with the James River Valley Library System or another public library, it's easy to add UJ's collection to your app. Open the app, select the hamburger menu in the bottom middle and choose "Add Library" below your existing linked libraries. You'll start from Step 3, then, with the instructions below.

Get Started

Download the Libby app from your preferred app store. Once it's installed, open the app and follow the instructions below.

Use the arrows on either side of the screenshots below to advance through the instructions, or read the plain-text instructions without screenshots at the bottom of the page.

Step-by-step screenshots:

Step 1: Start the library linking process

When you open Libby for the first time on a new device, you'll have to connect it to a library (or more than one) in order to browse and check out books and audiobooks. Select "Yes" to start the process.

Step 2: Search for your library

There are a few ways to get started. Here we'll walk through the second option, searching for a library by name or location. (If you've used Libby before on a different device, choose the first option.)

Step 3: Select the ND Academic Consortium

Search for "University of Jamestown." The library search result that will appear is the North Dakota Academic Consortium - this is the consortium that we are part of as of November 2022. Select that library.

Step 4: Add your library card

Now you'll sign in with your "library card." This just means you'll sign in with your UJ credentials so you can access our ebooks and audiobooks within Libby and check them out.

Step 5: Select UJ as your institution

Select the University of Jamestown as "where you use your library card." If we are not at the top of the list, hit the "10 More" button to view all of the libraries in the consortium and choose UJ.

Step 6: Sign in with your UJ credentials

Select "Next" on this screen. This is just Libby warning you that you will be taken to a new page to sign in. On the next screen, enter your UJ email address and the password you use for MyUJ and your email.

Step 7: Rename and click through

After you enter your UJ email address and password, your account is linked and we're almost done! Rename this library card if you'd like (so it's not just called "Linked Card"), and then hit "Next."

Step 8 (optional): Connect to Kindle

Connect your Kindle account if you prefer to read within Kindle. (Most books are available in Kindle, but some aren't.) Follow the on-screen prompts to log into your Kindle account and link it with Libby. After you complete or skip this step, you're all set and ready to browse!
